Smiles for Orphans and Vulnerable Children Initiative (SOVCI) celebrated Children’s Day 2024 at the Students’ Arcade, Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo. The theme was “Made For More”, and twelve orphanage homes were invited to take part.

Why “Made For More”

Speaking to BusinessDay, SOVCI’s Founder and Team Lead, Euriel Momah, said the celebration focused on orphans and vulnerable children. Children, he said, should be celebrated because they have so much potential in them.

He explained that many of these children do not live with their immediate family but in orphanage homes, and that society needs to make a conscious effort to pay attention to them. The theme was chosen so that the children would understand that, whatever their situation today, they have more in them — and that their background should not define their future.

“They are made for more, and they will work towards achieving that,” he said.

Family and community matter

Momah also said that the wider society must recognise the importance of family and community in a child’s life, because parents, caregivers and mentors play a vital role in shaping young minds and nurturing their talents.

Other speakers at the event included Oyinkansola Josephine Kuti, founder of The Beach Marshalls, which works with riverine communities, and Adeleke Adebayo, director of Hope at Last Orphanage Home in Ayobo, Lagos. Both spoke about the value of giving children time out to meet other children and to be celebrated.
